UN Security Council condemns attacks in Doha without mentioning Israel

(Patria) - The UN Security Council condemned recent attacks on Qatar's capital, Doha, but did not mention Israel in a statement adopted by all 15 members, including Israel's ally, the US.

Israel attempted to assassinate Hamas political leaders in an attack on Tuesday, escalating its military action in what the US assessed as a unilateral attack that does not advance US and Israeli interests.

The United States traditionally protects its ally Israel at the United Nations. US support for the Security Council statement, which could only be approved by consensus, reflects President Donald Trump's dissatisfaction with the attack ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Council members emphasized the importance of de-escalation and expressed solidarity with Qatar. They also stressed their support for Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement, backed by Great Britain and France, said.

The widely condemned operation in Doha is particularly sensitive because Qatar has hosted and mediated negotiations aimed at guaranteeing a ceasefire in the war in the Gaza Strip.

"Council members stressed that the release of hostages, including those killed by Hamas, as well as an end to the war and suffering in Gaza, must remain a top priority," the UN Security Council statement added.
