UN Security Council did not condemn Turkish operation in Syria

NEW YORK, (Patria) - The UN Security Council did not condemn the Turkish offensive in Syria, launched by Turkey on Saturday under the name "Olive Branch".

The Security Council is scheduled to discuss the delivery of humanitarian aid to war-torn areas on Tuesday.

An emergency meeting behind closed doors was held at the UN at the request of France.

French Ambassador to the UN Francois Delattre expressed great concern about the situation in northern Syria, also citing the "tragic humanitarian situation" caused by the operations of Syrian forces and their allies in other Syrian areas.

Delattre remained cautious about the situation in Afrin, where the Turkish army launched an offensive on Saturday against Kurdish fighters, who are part of a coalition fighting rebel groups in Syria with US support.

Other members of the UN Security Council stated a similar assessment at the meeting, diplomatic sources said.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley did not attend the emergency session, and no representative made a public statement after the meeting.

The Turkish offensive began after the international coalition led by the US announced the creation of border forces in Syria.

Kurdish fighters would also be part of these forces.

Turkey considers Kurdish fighters in Syria to be linked to the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is designated as a terrorist organization.
