COUNCIL OF EUROPE - Mijatović: Stop the slaughter in Ukraine

SARAJevo, (Patria) - The Council of Europe called on Moscow to immediately stop the slaughter in Ukraine, on the sixth day of the Russian invasion of that country.

"Hundreds of people, including many children, have been killed or injured in the war in a few days," Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović stated in a press release.

"The Russian military attack on Ukraine has been sowing death and destruction in the heart of Europe for six days," she added, calling for this "slaughter to be stopped immediately, before more innocent lives are lost."

"The recent bombing of Kharkiv," Ukraine's second-largest city, "has shown a flagrant disregard by Russian forces for civilian life, with dozens killed and injured and numerous civilians targeted, including residential buildings and kindergartens targeted by unguided missiles and cluster munitions," she criticized.

The Council sanctioned Russia in 2014 as well.

"The Russian authorities can do this. They must end this nightmare immediately," she emphasized. The Council of Europe has 47 member states, including Russia and Ukraine. On Friday, the day after the start of the Russian offensive on Ukraine, the Council of Europe suspended the participation of Russian representatives in its main bodies.

The Council sanctioned Russia in 2014 as well, after the annexation of Crimea.
