Around noon on April 19, 1993, a massacre of civilians occurred in Zenica when 15 citizens were killed and 50 wounded by shells fired at the city center from HVO positions in Putičevo, writes the Patria News Agency.
A large number of people were in the very center of the city at that time of day. The exact number of shells fired at the center of Zenica has not been determined, although the figure of nine howitzer shells is mentioned.
HVO General Tihomir Blaškić was charged with this massacre before the Hague Tribunal. There are two different claims about the source of the fire: the prosecution in the Blaškić trial claimed that these were HVO positions in Putičevo, while the defense advocated the thesis that the shelling was carried out by Serbian forces stationed on Vlašić.
The trial chamber acquitted General Blaškić of the charges on the counts of the indictment related to this shelling.
