Two people were killed in an anti-terror operation by Belgian police in the city of Verviers on Thursday, local media reported, Patria reports.
Judicial sources only confirmed that the anti-terror operation was carried out in the city centre of eastern Belgium, located between Liège and the German border.
RTBF reported that the aim of the operation was to check individuals suspected of being radicals. It was one of several checks on people believed to have returned to Belgium after participating in the Syrian civil war.
Local media reported that gunfire and several explosions were heard in a residential street in Verviers near the railway station. A photo taken by a witness and posted on Twitter shows police vehicles and ambulances blocking the street.
