It was May 7, 2001. The ceremonial laying of the cornerstone for the reconstruction of the Ferhadija Mosque, which was razed to the ground by Serbian extremists in Banja Luka in 1993, writes the Patria news agency.
A large number of worshippers, representatives of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and numerous domestic and international political officials gathered at the time.
And then the riots began. Orchestrated. All those who came that day to attend the ceremony were attacked with stones. That May 7 will be remembered for unprecedented vandalism in which Murat Badić (61) from Cazin lost his life, and 153 people were injured.
Banja Luka was in flames that day. Buses that brought worshippers from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina were set on fire. Images of unrest and scenes of war that everyone thought were long forgotten once again became the top topic in all world media.
Murat Badić died after 19 days in a coma, from injuries sustained in the brutal stoning. He came to Banja Luka from Austria, where he worked, because he wanted to attend the ceremony of reviving Banja Luka's beauty.
Unfortunately, he did not live to see the rebuilt Ferhadija Mosque. And that was his dream. They killed him, but his killer or killers have never been identified to this day. Only a few people were punished for the riots.
