Vance: Pakistan and India should de-escalate tensions, but we will not interfere in the midst of war

(Patria) - U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated yesterday that Pakistan and India should de-escalate tensions, saying that America cannot control the nuclear-armed Asian countries.

He said they want this "thing" to de-escalate as quickly as possible.

- What we can do is try to encourage these people to de-escalate a bit, but we will not interfere in the midst of a war that basically does not concern us and has nothing to do with America's ability to control it - Vance said for Fox News.

India is an important partner for Washington, which aims to counter China's growing influence, while Pakistan remains a U.S. ally despite its diminished significance after the withdrawal of American troops from neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.

Analysts and some former U.S. officials said that American involvement in achieving diplomatic goals in Russia's war in Ukraine and Israel's war in Gaza could force Washington to leave India and Pakistan to themselves in the early days of their tensions, without much direct pressure from the U.S. government, Reuters reports.

Pakistan and India have accused each other of drone attacks, and Islamabad's defense minister said further escalation of the conflict is "increasingly certain." Two days of fighting have claimed the lives of more than 40 people.

U.S. President Donald Trump called the rising tensions a disgrace, saying he hopes the two countries will reduce tensions. The State Department called on both countries to work on what Washington calls a "responsible solution."
