Well-known Serbian beekeeper Veroljub Umeljić will hold a consultation for beekeepers at the Municipal building in Hadžići, announced the Association of Beekeepers of Sarajevo Canton, reports Patria agency.
Umeljić is the author of several professional papers and books in the field of beekeeping, and will share his own experiences with beekeepers from Sarajevo regarding the use of different types of hives, which play an important role in raising bee colonies and producing bee products.
Although there is no exact number, it is estimated that more than 10,000 people in Bosnia and Herzegovina keep bees. Some do it only as a hobby, but some are very advanced beekeepers for whom it is a primary business. Honey from Bosnia and Herzegovina is ranked among the highest quality honeys in the world, although the country's beekeeping potential is not sufficiently utilized.
The largest number of beekeepers in BiH use so-called LR hives. These are American-type hives, which are also the most common among beekeepers worldwide. However, there are increasingly more who believe that bee pastures in BiH could be better utilized if some other types of hives were used, for example, those types that have a smaller space for honey collection, because it is difficult for bees in the BiH area to fill the LR honey super, due to increasingly shorter bee grazing periods.
Umeljić will also speak to beekeepers about some of the techniques for rearing queen bees.
The beekeepers' consultation begins at 2:00 PM, writes Patria.
