Major blow for Trump: Democrats celebrate first victory in Alabama in 25 years

ALABAMA, (Patria) - Democrat Doug Jones won a Senate seat in the conservative state of Alabama on Tuesday, delivering a political blow to President Donald Trump in a race marked by accusations of sexual assault against Republican candidate Roy Moore.

Jones is the first Democrat to be elected senator for Alabama in the last 25 years and will reduce the already narrow Republican majority to 51 to 49 seats for the Democrats. After 99 percent of the ballots were counted, Jones leads Moore by 1.5 percent.

The Republican has not yet conceded defeat, telling supporters in Montgomery that votes are still coming in and announcing that he will seek a recount if the difference is less than half a percent. Trump congratulated Jones via Twitter, saying "A win is a win.".

The dirty campaign attracted the attention of domestic and international public opinion and divided the Republican Party due to accusations by several women that Moore sexually assaulted them when they were teenagers, and Moore was in his 30s.

Moore (70), a conservative Christian who was twice removed from the Alabama Supreme Court for violating federal laws, denied the accusations and said he did not know any of the women accusing him.

Trump supported Moore in the campaign, although party leaders in Washington turned their backs on him.

Jones (63), a former federal prosecutor, called the elections a referendum on dignity and promised voters that he would not embarrass them in Washington.

- I have always believed that the people of Alabama have much more in common than what divides them - Jones told enthusiastic supporters in Birmingham. He is expected to take office in early January after the election results are confirmed.

One woman accused Moore of harassing her 40 years ago when she was 14 years old, and he was over 30 at the time, the Washington Post reported in November. Two other women came forward with accusations that he had harassed them when they were teenagers.
