Major unrest in Ferguson: Protests over police officer not being charged for murder

In Ferguson (USA) last night, there were clashes between police and demonstrators after a St. Louis County grand jury decided not to charge police officer Darren Wilson for the murder of 18-year-old black teenager Michael Brown, reports the Patria news agency.

Several gunshots were fired, and a number of vehicles and buildings were set on fire.

One police officer was injured after being shot at in a suburb of St. Louis, near Ferguson, but it is not known whether the shooting is related to the street protests following the grand jury's decision in the Michael Brown case. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, before the jury reached its decision, declared a state of emergency in the region due to possible protests and called in 400 National Guard members for assistance.

Brown's family stated that they are deeply disappointed by the jury's decision.

Late last night, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the police station in Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis, after the grand jury's decision. Officer Darren Wilson killed unarmed Brown on August 9 in Ferguson, sparking a wave of protests.
