Large part of Ukraine without electricity due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure

(Patria) - Ukraine yesterday introduced emergency power outages in most of the country, a day after Russia launched major attacks on energy infrastructure.

Power restrictions are in effect in all regions except three, following Saturday's drone and missile attack on energy targets in which 19 people were injured.

Ukraine's state electricity grid operator Ukrenergo said the outages affected both industry and households.

Continuous Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid in recent weeks have forced the government to introduce power outages across the country.

Without adequate air defense to counter Russian attacks and enable repairs, the situation could worsen as the demand for electricity grows.

Among the most significant recent attacks were the April barrage that damaged Kyiv's largest thermal power plant and the massive attack on May 8 that targeted electricity generation and transmission facilities in several regions.

After Saturday's barrage, the Ukrainian Air Force announced yesterday that air defense shot down all 25 drones launched overnight.

Russia claimed yesterday to have taken control of the village of Umanske in the Donetsk region, which is partially occupied by Russia.

Russia's coordinated new offensive is focused on the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, but appears to include testing Ukrainian defenses further south, in Donetsk, while making breakthroughs in the northern Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

- In Russia, six people were injured in the shelling of the town of Shebekino in the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine - said regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov yesterday.

In the neighboring Kursk region, three people were injured yesterday by a drone bomb, said acting regional director Aleksey Smirnov.
