Meat imports to BiH increased, veterinary inspectors cautious, every package is checked

Due to the death of several hundred cattle and several thousand broiler chickens during the devastating floods that hit Bosnia and Herzegovina in May this year, our country will have to increase meat imports, reports the BiH news agency Patria.

Experts from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo warn that BiH has spent millions of marks on meat imports every year, but that due to the floods that destroyed a large number of farms in BiH, it will now need to increase those imports, but also introduce additional controls at the borders, to prevent abuse of the current situation in our country.

However, they assure that citizens should not worry. Our country's veterinary inspectors have the knowledge and means to detect even the slightest suspicious shipment of meat. Inspectors are particularly cautious during the summer months, when the possibility of meat contamination also increases.

Nihad Fejzić, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo, also confirmed for Patria that citizens should not worry about the quality of imported meat.

- Our country has good control systems, good border veterinary inspectors, so there should be no problems - said Fejzić.

He notes that BiH needs to make efforts to compensate for the livestock that was destroyed during the floods as soon as possible in order to reduce the outflow of money from the country due to imports.
