Part of highway collapsed in China, at least 24 dead, dozens seriously injured

(Patria) - At least 24 people were killed and around thirty seriously injured were transported by helicopter to nearby hospitals in the collapse of a section of highway in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.

After the collapse, numerous cars fell into a deep river basin ravaged by flash floods.

This Chinese region has been drenched by heavy rain for days, so it is assumed that a landslide was activated on that section of the highway.

Photos and videos on social media show a highway running along a slope where the roadway has partially collapsed and broken away. Wrecked cars that apparently plunged down the slope are also visible.

The collapsed section of the road is about 18 meters long and covers an area of about 184 square meters, CCTV reports.

About 500 members of emergency services, police, firefighters, and other relevant authorities are participating in the rescue operation. The cause of the accident is currently being investigated.
