On the eve of Easter truce: Russia and Ukraine exchange 175 POWs each

(Patria) - Russia and Ukraine released 175 prisoners of war each today before the start of a planned Easter truce, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced.

"In addition, seven citizens of the Russian Federation, illegally held by the Kyiv regime, were returned," the Ministry stated, thanking the United Arab Emirates for mediating the prisoner exchange.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the news of the exchange shortly thereafter.

"One hundred and seventy-five soldiers. Soldiers of the Armed Forces, members of the National Guard, border guards. Soldiers, sergeants and officers. And seven civilians," Zelenskyy announced on social media.

"Our soldiers defended Ukraine on various battlefields: in Mariupol, at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kyiv, and Kursk regions.

Among them are the wounded. Most of them have been in captivity since 2022. And finally, they are - home," Zelenskyy stated.

A 32-hour truce is expected to begin at 4 PM so that Christians in Ukraine and Russia can celebrate Orthodox Easter.

The two sides regularly exchange prisoners, as well as the bodies of fallen soldiers during the war, which has been ongoing for more than four years.
