UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General Zainab Hawa Bangura on Wednesday welcomed the move by the Croatian government, which adopted the final draft law on the rights of victims of sexual violence in the Homeland War and assessed that this step by official Zagreb will help heal war wounds and serve as an example to other countries facing the "devastating legacy of wartime rape", reports the Patria News Agency.
The draft law, which needs to be confirmed by the Croatian Parliament, provides for financial compensation for victims of rape in the amount of 13,000 euros, and for more severe consequences of sexual violence 19,000 euros, and they will also receive a monthly financial compensation in the amount of 317 euros.
Victims of rape will also have the right to legal and health assistance, as well as mandatory and supplementary health insurance. This law enables them regular systematic check-ups, as well as accommodation in institutions for providing support and services in order to recover from war trauma and to help them rebuild their lives.
