UN Official: US Humanitarian Policy in Gaza is Absurd and Cynical

(Patria) - A UN official criticized US plans to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, such as building a temporary port and airlifting aid.

He assessed these as absurd and cynical methods as long as the US continues to militarily aid Israel.

At a time when Gaza faces starvation five months after the start of the Israeli operation against Hamas, the US military delivered food to the residents by plane.

The US also announced plans to build a temporary port for importing humanitarian aid on the Mediterranean coast.

- Airdropping aid does not do much to alleviate malnutrition and does nothing to stop starvation - UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Michael Fakhri told reporters in Geneva.

He warned of chaos as starving people fight for supplies and added that no one had requested ports.

- When countries use airdrops, as well as these sea ports, it is common, if not always, when delivering humanitarian aid to enemy territory - Fakhri said.

The US diplomatic mission in Geneva was not immediately available for comment.

Fakhri, a Lebanese-Canadian law professor who received a mandate from the UN Human Rights Council to document and advise on global food security, said such methods make no sense as long as Washington continues to militarily support Israel.
