American student Otto Warmbier (22), who was released from North Korea last week in a coma, died on Monday afternoon, reports Patria agency.
The family thanked the medical center that treated him.
- Unfortunately, the terrible torture and mistreatment our son experienced at the hands of North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible except the one that occurred today - the family said.
Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea for "stealing a propaganda poster," AP recalls.
American doctors said Otto Warmbier returned to the U.S. with severe brain injuries, but they were not sure what caused them.
