UKRAINIAN VIEW Summit Trump–Putin in Alaska: A Pyrrhic victory for the Russian dictator

(Patria) - Sickening. Shameful. And ultimately – useless. With these words, Kyiv Independent described the summit in Alaska where US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met.

On our screens, writes the Ukrainian media, "a bloody dictator and war criminal received a royal welcome in the land of the free – while his drones fly towards Ukrainian cities."

Ahead of the meeting in Alaska, Trump announced that he wanted an "immediate ceasefire" and that Putin would face "serious consequences" if he did not agree. However, after two and a half hours of closed-door meeting, Trump and Putin emerged before the media – and said almost nothing. "Progress has been made" and "understanding has been reached", but there was no agreement on the "most important point" – clearly, Ukraine.

Trump did not get what he wanted. But Putin? He certainly got it.

"From the moment he set foot on American soil, the Russian dictator was beaming," writes Kyiv Independent. He was finally accepted and respected by one of the world's leaders. While Trump's predecessor called him a murderer, Trump gave him a royal welcome – a red carpet, a warm handshake, a flyover by American bombers, and a ride in a limousine.
