(Patria) - The Ukrainian parliament yesterday ratified an agreement with the USA on the exploitation of Ukrainian natural resources, which Kyiv hopes could pave the way for new American military aid.
"The Ukrainian parliament has ratified a historic agreement on economic partnership between Ukraine and the United States," Ukrainian Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko announced on platform X.
The document pertains to the extraction of minerals, oil, and gas in Ukraine. It does not include security guarantees for Kyiv, although Kyiv had insisted on them.
Svyrydenko had previously stated that she hoped the agreement would enable Ukraine to receive new military aid from the administration of President Donald Trump, who wants to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
The agreement was signed at the end of April after weeks of tensions between Kyiv and Washington, which culminated in a verbal clash between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office at the end of February.
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and the two countries have been fiercely at war ever since.
