(Patria) - Ukrainian anti-corruption detectives have detained a former minister of energy as part of a broad investigation that triggered a political crisis last November due to high-level corruption, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced on Sunday.
The so-called "Midas" case focuses on an alleged $100 million bribery scheme at a state-owned atomic agency, which ensnared a number of high-ranking officials and business elites, including a former associate of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Reuters reports.
"Today, NABU detectives detained the former minister of energy while crossing the state border, as part of the 'Midas' case," NABU said in a statement.
"Priority investigative actions are underway and are being carried out in accordance with the requirements of the law." The agency stated that more details would be released. The individual was not named.
The previous two Ukrainian ministers of energy resigned amid the fallout from the scandal, a case that also cost the head of Zelensky's cabinet his position.
The fight against corruption is a key priority in Ukraine's reform efforts as it strives for European Union membership, which requires the country to shed its decades-long problem of corruption.
Authorities have targeted lawmakers, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and a former presidential advisor in recent weeks on various charges.
