(Patria) - An explosion in the north of occupied Crimea destroyed Russian missiles being transported by rail, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced, reports the BBC. The Russian head of the city of Dzhankoy said the area was attacked by drones.
Ukraine announced explosions but did not explicitly say it was behind the attacks. If confirmed as true, this would be a rare incursion by the Ukrainian army into Crimea, which has been occupied since 2014.
“The (explosions) continue the process of Russian demilitarization and are preparing the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea for de-occupation,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement. Kyiv said the missiles were intended for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Ihor Ivin, an administrator installed by Russia, said a 33-year-old man was hospitalized after sustaining a shrapnel injury from a downed drone.
The Russian state news agency TASS quoted Ivin as saying on TV Krym-24 that several buildings caught fire and the power grid was damaged. Ukraine announced that the Russian Kalibr-KN cruise missiles destroyed had an operational range of over 2,500 km on land and 375 km at sea.
