(Patria) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law legalizing cannabis for medical purposes, according to the parliamentary database.
More than six million people, including cancer patients, civilians with post-traumatic stress disorder, and wounded soldiers, need cannabis-based medicines, the legislator claims.
The bill, signed by Zelensky on Tuesday, would only take effect six months after its official publication, and the ban on the sale or supply of cannabis for everyday use would remain in force.
Parliament supported the law in December, backed by war volunteers, but politicians from former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's party prevented it from being sent to Zelensky for signature.
They believe the law poses a threat to the country's future.
The Ministry of Health supported the law. It must contain a list of diseases and conditions for which medical cannabis is prescribed.
The law provides for special permits for the cultivation and sale of cannabis, as well as 24-hour video surveillance of producers accessible to the police, Reuters reports.
