(Patria) – Ukrainian authorities and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine have begun the process of prisoner exchange, the President of Ukraine announced on Thursday.
In the first exchange of its kind in 2020, Ukraine will receive 19 of its citizens back.
In the conflict that has been ongoing since 2014, more than 13,000 civilians have lost their lives, and more than 1.5 million have been displaced. A large part of Ukraine has come under separatist control.
NATO and the US support Ukraine both politically and militarily, which has increased tensions in relations with Russia, which supports the separatists.
