United Kingdom announces immigration policy review

(Patria) - The United Kingdom (UK) government yesterday presented plans to review the state's immigration policy and end the "failed experiment of free market and mass immigration", and announced restrictions on visas for skilled workers.

Under the new UK government plans, visas for skilled workers will only be issued to qualified professionals, while visas for less skilled workers will only be issued for key areas defined by the national industrial strategy, Reuters reports.

The government said these changes will be part of a policy document known as a White Paper, which will be published today with the aim of presenting plans to reduce immigration to the domestic public.

- We inherited a failed immigration system in which the previous government replaced free movement with a free market experiment. We are taking decisive steps to restore control and order to the UK immigration system - said UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Following the success of Nigel Farage's right-wing, anti-immigration Reform Party in local elections held this month, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced pressure to reduce migration, Reuters reports.

The number of people coming to the UK minus the number leaving rose to a record 906,000 by June 2023, compared to 184,000 foreigners who arrived in the same period in 2019 when the UK was still an EU member.
