Suspect Arrested in Murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson

(Patria) - A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson outside a hotel in midtown Manhattan last week, New York officials announced yesterday.

The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione (26), was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after someone at a McDonald's recognized him and reported him to authorities, believing he resembled the attacker, officials said at a press conference.

Mangione was found with a firearm and silencer consistent with the weapon used to shoot Thompson, as well as clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the killer, said Jessica Tisch of the New York Police Department.

He possessed multiple fake IDs, including a fake New Jersey driver's license that matched the one the attacker used to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the shooting.

Police also found a handwritten document discussing "his motivation and mindset," Tisch said.

Mangione was arrested by local police on weapons possession charges, and New York detectives are en route to Pennsylvania to question him, she added.

Thompson (50) was shot outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday by a masked man who appeared to be waiting for his arrival.

Police have not publicly identified a motive but said Thompson appeared to be intentionally targeted.

The suspect fled the scene and then rode a bicycle into Central Park.

Surveillance cameras captured him exiting the park and taking a taxi to a bus terminal in Upper Manhattan, where police believe he took a bus out of the city.

Thompson had been the CEO of UnitedHealth's benefits division since April 2021, part of his 20-year career with the company.

He was in New York to attend an annual investor conference. A company spokesperson declined to comment on the latest reports.
