Ceasefire in Ukraine, rebels to withdraw heavy weapons within two days

A ceasefire between government forces and pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine came into effect on Sunday morning. According to foreign media reports, the agreement to end the conflict is being respected, with only a few minor incidents recorded on both sides, reports the Patria news agency. 

More than 5,500 people have lost their lives in the conflict in Ukraine so far.

Just a few hours before the ceasefire took effect, fighting between government forces and pro-Russian rebels was intense, particularly near Debaltseve, where an important transport hub is located.

The agreement reached on Thursday in Minsk (Belarus) after marathon negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France stipulates that Kyiv and the rebels must begin withdrawing heavy weapons from the front lines within two days of the ceasefire taking effect. The ceasefire also provides for the creation of a neutral buffer zone.
