(Patria) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said today before the House Foreign Affairs Committee that President Donald Trump will personally attend the upcoming NATO summit of heads of state, which will be held in Turkey next month.
This announcement comes at a time of extremely strained relations between Trump and the North Atlantic Alliance, further deepened by the U.S. initiation of war in Iran.
- I believe the upcoming NATO meeting in Turkey in July is probably the most important in the alliance's history because there are some things that need to be clarified and fixed - Rubio said.
Recall, in April, Trump called this 77-year-old military alliance a "paper tiger" and openly suggested that the United States could consider leaving NATO.
Such a reaction from Trump came after member states ignored his official call for military assistance in operations to reopen the strategically key Strait of Hormuz.
The strait, through which a fifth of the world's oil passes, was closed by Iran after U.S.-Israeli strikes in late February and early March.
