(Patria) - Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced.
According to Daily Sabah, his bodyguard was also killed.
"The residence of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of the Islamic Resistance Hamas, was hit in Tehran, and as a result of this incident, he and one of his bodyguards were killed," the statement said.
Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed after participating in the inauguration of the new Iranian president.
The statement said that Hamas will retaliate against Israel for this assassination.
Although no one has yet claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's assassination, suspicion immediately fell on Israel, which had promised to kill him and other Hamas leaders for the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Last month, at least 10 members of Ismail Haniyeh's family were killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit the western part of Gaza City.
Most Hamas leaders remain hidden from the public, while others have spent most of their lives avoiding assassination attempts by Israel.
