
(Patria) - A Russian satellite broke into more than 100 pieces in Earth's orbit overnight, forcing astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) to take shelter, NASA announced yesterday.
It was not specified what caused the incident. It is about the Earth observation satellite RESURS-P1, which has not been used since 2022.
The incident occurred in orbit near the ISS. American astronauts had to take shelter in a spacecraft for almost an hour, NASA announced.
American radars detected that the satellite broke into a cloud of debris during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, LeoLabs company announced.
The US Space Command stated that "more than 100 pieces" were created, emphasizing that they pose no threat.
