(Patria) - Ten demonstrators were killed on Monday after supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the presidential palace in the heavily fortified Green Zone of Baghdad, local media report.
More than 150 demonstrators were injured in the unrest, local media "Baghdad Today" reported, citing a security source.
The situation deteriorated in Baghdad earlier on Monday after al-Sadr said he was leaving politics forever. The palace is located in the heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses government agencies and several foreign diplomatic missions, reports AA.
Clashes broke out between al-Sadr's supporters and supporters of the rival Iran-aligned Coordination Framework.
The Iraqi Joint Operations Command announced a nationwide curfew on Monday after supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the presidential palace.
The curfew began at 7 PM local time and will last until further notice, the command announced. Earlier today, the command imposed a curfew on the capital Baghdad, which began at 3:30 PM local time.
The move came as Iraqi security forces fired to disperse Sadr's supporters from the vicinity of the presidential palace, which also houses government offices, and took full control of it, local media reported.
