(Patria) - The death toll in a train crash near Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, has risen to 14, with 84 others injured, the railway company said Tuesday, as rescuers finished work to extract survivors still trapped in the wreckage.
The collision between a commuter train and a long-distance train occurred late Monday in Bekasi, just outside Jakarta.
Bobby Rasyidin, president director of Indonesia's state railway company PT KAI, said the death toll had risen to 14.
Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, said Tuesday that the evacuation was complete, adding that rescuing trapped passengers from the mangled carriages was a delicate process.
- We had to involve personnel with specific skills to carry out a careful extraction - he said, adding that there were no more passengers to find, although rescuers would take measures if they found body parts as they continued to search the wreckage.
A women-only carriage bore the brunt of the accident. Syafii said all the victims were women and most of them were pinned by the crushed metal.
Before uncoupling the trains, rescuers were seen using angle grinders to cut through the metal of compartments to reach survivors.
Bobby said at an earlier news conference that the commuter train first collided with a taxi on the tracks, and was then hit by the long-distance train.
Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is investigating the accident.
