SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Spanish police announced today that they arrested a New Zealander in Madrid, sentenced to life imprisonment in the US for sexual crimes and pedophilia, and added that he was among the ten most wanted fugitives of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Police stated that the 40-year-old New Zealander was arrested after being spotted on Wednesday in a hotel in the center of Madrid, where he was staying under one of the false identities he used to avoid capture. Police did not disclose the fugitive's full name, only his initials "MJP".
He is one of the "FBI's ten most wanted fugitives", for whom a reward of $100,000 was offered, police added. According to sources close to the case, this is Michael James Pratt, sentenced to life imprisonment in the US for child pornography, sexual exploitation, sexual assault, and illicit enrichment.
According to the FBI website, this New Zealander recruited several young adult and minor women in the US and Canada between 2012 and 2019 through classified ads for modeling work and forced them into sexual acts. The accused, owner of a production company and pornography websites, published videos and thus acquired about $17 million.
Pratt fled after the verdict was pronounced, and an international arrest warrant has been issued for him since 2019.
