Ceasefire comes into effect in Syria

DAMASCUS, (Patria) - A daily humanitarian ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta, a Syrian rebel enclave near Damascus, came into effect this morning to allow civilians to leave the area, but there is no information on whether humanitarian corridors have been established, world media report, BHRT reports.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that no violence has been recorded in Eastern Ghouta since this morning, but there was artillery fire in the suburb of Douma.

According to Red Cross officials, humanitarian corridors will only function if they are carefully established.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a daily humanitarian ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta to be introduced starting today.

- By order of the Russian President, a daily humanitarian ceasefire comes into effect starting tomorrow and will last every day from 9 AM to 2 PM - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last night, adding that Russia will help evacuate civilians.

Putin made this decision after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution for an immediate 30-day ceasefire in Syria to evacuate civilians and the wounded, and deliver humanitarian aid.
