Former BiH national team player Ivan Velić seriously injured in traffic accident

MOSTAR, (Patria) - Former basketball national team player of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ivan Velić was seriously injured in a traffic accident that occurred last night in the village of Međine near Mostar.

Velić suffered a concussion, and the Emergency Center of the University Clinical Hospital in Mostar stated that he is out of danger.

He will remain in the hospital in Mostar for a few days for observation, and special tests will be performed due to the severity of the traffic accident.

Ivan Velić was born on October 19, 1972. Although born in Livno, most of his sports career, both as a player and as a coach, is linked to the Siroki Brijeg Basketball Club, a multiple champion of BiH.

In the period from 2009 to 2012, as the coach of Siroki, he won three BiH championship titles and two Cups.

Ivan Velić, along with Bariša Krasić, was one of the first players from Herzegovina who decided to play for the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina immediately after the war, despite great political pressure.

Four years ago, he worked as an assistant coach to selector Duško Ivanović in the basketball national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Last season he spent on the bench of Sloboda from Tuzla, and a few days ago he was appointed as the coach of Cibona Zagreb.
