(Patria) - Leader of the FETO movement and Turkish politician Fethullah Gulen has died in the United States of America where he was stationed, Turkish media and a website linked to Gulen announced on Monday.
He was 83 years old.
Gulen built a powerful Islamic movement in Turkey and beyond, but spent his later years accused of orchestrating a coup attempt against Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan, charges he denied, Reuters writes.
Herkul, a website that publishes Gulen's sermons, announced on its X account that Gulen died on Sunday evening in a hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Gulen was a former ally of Erdogan, but they fell out, and Erdogan held him responsible for the 2016 coup attempt in which soldiers commanded warplanes, tanks, and helicopters. Around 250 people were killed in the attempted takeover.
Gulen had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999.
