In the last three years, 121 suicides were committed in Sarajevo

SARAJEVO, (Patria) – In the last three years, 121 suicides were committed in Sarajevo Canton, of which 94 were men and 27 women. 

During 2018, 38 suicides were registered in Sarajevo Canton, committed by hanging (14), use of firearms (11), jumping from a height (10), poisoning twice, and drowning. Last year, 29 men and nine women committed suicide. 

The year before, 43 suicides were registered in Sarajevo Canton, committed by hanging (22), use of firearms (8), jumping from a height (7), sharp object (4), activating an explosive device and electric shock – one each. In 2017, 37 men and six women took their own lives. 

During 2016, 40 suicides were registered in Sarajevo Canton, committed by hanging (17), jumping from a height (8), use of firearms six times, drowning three times, sharp object and poisoning – two each, activating a hand grenade and other methods – one each. Suicide was committed by 28 men and 12 women. 

In 2019, several cases of suicide have already been registered. In the Stup settlement, at the beginning of January, a man killed himself by jumping from the 11th floor, and on February 18, in the same settlement, a young woman committed suicide by jumping from the balcony of the apartment where she lived.
