TEHRAN, (Patria) - All 60 passengers and six crew members on board the plane that crashed in southern Iran have been killed, confirmed a spokesman for the airline Aseman Airlines, AP reports, as carried by Al Jazeera.
The ATR-72 aircraft of the Iranian airline Aseman Airlines, which was flying from Tehran to the city of Yasuj in southwestern Iran, crashed near the remote mountainous region of Semirom, about 620 kilometres south of Tehran.
State-run Press TV reports that 66 people were on board the plane, which disappeared from radar 50 minutes after takeoff from Tehran's Mehrabad Airport.
- The plane crashed in an inaccessible mountainous area near the city of Semirom - reported the ISNA news agency, citing emergency services spokesman Mojtaba Khaledi.
Authorities stated that the aircraft was owned by the semi-private airline Aseman Airlines, headquartered in Tehran, which specialises in flights to remote airports across the country but also operates international flights.
Under decades-long international sanctions, Iran's passenger aircraft fleet is outdated, and accidents have occurred relatively frequently in recent years, AP notes.
After reaching a nuclear deal with world powers in 2015, Iran signed contracts with Airbus and Boeing to purchase a number of passenger aircraft.
