More than 10 killed in riots on election day in Venezuela

8.1 million people voted in the elections for the Constituent Assembly of Venezuela last weekend, the Electoral Commission announced after the polling stations closed, writes Patria News Agency. 

The results mean that 41.5 percent of voters cast their ballots in Sunday's elections, said the president of Venezuela's National Electoral Council, Tibisay Lucena.

On the other hand, opposition politicians claim that only 2.48 million voters participated, out of a total of 19.4 million eligible voters, and the opposition called the election results "the biggest electoral fraud in the country's history".

The state prosecutor confirmed that eight people were killed during the election day, while the opposition claims that 15 people were killed.  At least seven members of the National Guard were injured in an attack in the capital, Caracas.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles said it was a "black day" and blamed what he called the "sick ambitions" of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The leader of the opposition faction of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Stalin Gonzalez, warned on Sunday that President Nicolas Maduro would regret the "unfair elections".

He added that a few hours after the polling stations opened, only an estimated 3 percent of voters had turned out.

- The country is in a state of disobedience and does not want to participate in this fraud. Maduro will regret this fraud that is happening today for the rest of his life – Gonzalez said.
