Panel discussion in Mostar: "Will the Hague Tribunal's verdicts help us confront war crimes?"

MOSTAR, (Patria) - The Center for Critical Thinking, portal Tačno.net and Forum ZFD are organizing a panel discussion on the topic "Will the Hague Tribunal's verdicts help us confront war crimes?".

The panel will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018, starting at 7 p.m. in the congress hall of Hotel Bristol in Mostar.

The speakers will be Marijana Markotić, Nerzuk Ćurak, Dino Mustafić and Svetozar Pudarić. 

Since its establishment in 1993, the Hague Tribunal has indicted a total of 161 individuals for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. 83 have been convicted, 19 acquitted. In the end, has the Hague Tribunal fulfilled the purpose of its existence?! Has it delivered what it was founded for – justice for victims.

Did the Tribunal, as Judge Agius said, “become an inspiration worldwide and as a movement that began a quarter of a century ago, it grew into an ‘expectation that war criminals can, must and will be brought to justice’.”

“Since then, accountability for atrocious crimes has crystallized as a universal value that will continue to define the form of the struggle for justice in the future.”

Why are many criminals across the region considered heroes while victims are neglected, and reconciliation is often overshadowed by nationalist rhetoric?

Can the verdicts of the court in The Hague help us confront the crimes committed in the 1990s?

Who denies the truth established beyond reasonable doubt by the Hague Tribunal and why?

These are just some of the questions that will be discussed at the panel in Mostar.
