(Patria) - Democrats have officially introduced a resolution to impeach Donald Trump over the storming of the Capitol in Washington by his supporters last week, world media report.
The document accuses Trump of "inciting rebellion" and claims that Trump actively encouraged last week's violence.
The resolution also mentions Trump's false claims of stolen elections, as well as a recording in which he asked the Secretary of State of Georgia to find him 11,000 votes.
The impeachment resolution, which the House of Representatives will vote on later this week, is the Democrats' first step towards making Trump the first president in history to be impeached twice.
The impeachment article points to Trump's repeated false claims that he won the election and his speech to the gathered crowd on January 6, shortly before his mob broke into the Capitol. Trump's call to the Republican Secretary of State of Georgia was also cited, in which Trump urged him to "find" enough votes to win the election there.
"By all this, Trump has seriously endangered the security of the United States and its government institutions. He threatened the integrity of the democratic system and hindered the peaceful transition of power. In doing so, he betrayed his trust as president," the resolution states.
The resolution also invokes the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, noting that it prohibits any person who has engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the US from holding office.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated yesterday that she would proceed with introducing the resolution unless Vice President Mike Pence invoked the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.
"In the name of protecting our Constitution and our democracy, we will take immediate steps because this president poses an immediate threat to both," Pelosi said.
"Day by day, this president's attacks on our democracy become more horrific, and thus the need to take immediate action becomes greater," she added.
Pence is against removing Trump by invoking the 25th Amendment, his advisor said.
Nine days remain until the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
Republicans had previously blocked a proposal to immediately consider a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to remove the president, who is no longer capable of performing his duties, from office, which has never been used before.
