Mysterious tunnel discovered in southern Paris

(Patria) - A mysterious tunnel under construction has been discovered near a major prison in the southern part of Paris, police sources and city officials announced.

The tunnel was discovered during routine electrical work some 450 meters from La Sante prison. "Bags of rubble and a bed" were found at the scene, reports RSE.

Guillaume Durand, an official from the city council of the 14th arrondissement where the prison is located, said he does not believe the tunnel was part of an escape plan.

- It is a four-meter tunnel, a dead end on Rue de la Sante, but more than 500 meters from the prison. Police believe it was something intended to facilitate access to the catacombs - said Durand.

The Paris Catacombs are one of the city's most popular attractions, attracting around 500,000 visitors annually.
