Horrifying data leaked to the public: Children abused, beaten, raped...

Data on more than 2,000 reported cases of abuse from May 2013 to October 2015 and the horrors that occurred on the Pacific island of Nauru, where Australia housed people who sought asylum from it, was published today by the British Guardian, reports the news agency Patria.  

Nauru is, incidentally, the smallest island nation in the world, with a population of less than 10,000. According to the census from July this year, the island hosts 338 men, 55 women, and 49 refugee children.

The documents published by the Guardian contain over 8,000 pages that testify to unprecedented attacks, sexual abuse, attempted self-harm, child abuse, and the horrific conditions in which asylum seekers live on this island.

The documents were leaked to the public just a few weeks after Australia was shaken by a scandal involving the abuse of minors in detention, which prompted a broad investigation.

More than half of the 2,116 cases involve children, even though they make up only 18 percent of the residents of the Nauru immigration camp. 

The range of abuse is very wide, according to the report. From a guard in the camp slapping a boy and threatening to kill him, and a girl who asked for permission to shower for four minutes, for which the guard demanded sex from her, to children suffering severe trauma from genital mutilation and sexual abuse. Numerous cases of self-harm have been recorded on a daily basis.

The files also include seven instances of sexual assault on children, 59 reports of attacks on children, 30 attempted self-harm incidents involving children, and 159 threats of self-harm involving children.

Australia houses refugees in two camps outside its territory - one on the island of Nauru and the other on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

Australia has conducted investigations into the horrific conditions in the center several times so far, following warnings from various human rights organizations. To date, no one has been punished for these horrific crimes.
