(Patria) - Dark plumes of smoke have loomed over highways near Jerusalem, and the Israeli government has engaged the army in extinguishing a large wildfire spreading in the area.
Several people have been injured. Defence Minister Israel Katz declared a "national state of emergency," AFP reports.

The Israeli rescue agency stated that hundreds of civilians are in danger from the worst wildfires in recent years, while Katz ordered troops to be deployed to support firefighters.
The rescue agency announced that it has provided assistance to 22 people, 12 of whom were transferred to the hospital, mostly due to smoke inhalation.
The statement added that the alert level has been raised to the highest level.
"We are facing a national emergency and all available forces must be mobilized to save lives and bring the fires under control," Katz announced.
This is the biggest fire Israel has ever known.
