High-ranking Iranian commander killed in alleged Israeli strike in Syria

(Patria) - A high-ranking Iranian commander was killed in an alleged Israeli attack in Syria, Iranian media reported, according to the BBC.

Seyyed Razi Mousavi was an "experienced military advisor" of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,
the semi-official Tasnim news agency announced.

It is stated that he was killed in an airstrike on the Sayyida Zeinab area southeast of
Damascus. Israel has carried out military strikes in Syria for years against what it says are Iran-linked targets.

The frequency of strikes has increased in recent months following Hamas's attack on October 7. Iranian forces have been present in Syria since the early stages of the Syrian war, where they helped support the government of President Bashar al-Assad. It is stated that Mousavi was an assistant to IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by the United States in 2020.

He was one of the highest-ranking IRGC operatives in Syria, according to Tasnim, and helped
coordinate relations between Tehran and Damascus.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced that Israel will "pay for this crime".

The Israeli military, which rarely comments on cross-border attacks, did not immediately comment. Earlier this month, Iran accused Israel of killing two Revolutionary Guard members in Syria.
