(Patria) - In southern Italy, in the cities of Noto and Ragusa, police carried out an operation in which 12 people were arrested. They are suspected of abusing and physically assaulting users of two elderly care facilities in the Pakino district.
A total of 16 people are under investigation on suspicion of abusing elderly people and patients with mental disabilities, Italian media report.
According to information released by the Italian news agency Ansa, 20 users of these social and healthcare facilities suffered violence. The investigation, coordinated by the public prosecutor's office in Syracuse, was launched after citizens filed reports about the inhumane conditions in which patients were forced to live.
These reports indicated that patients with disabilities were exposed to poor conditions and deprived of adequate assistance, which further alarmed the authorities.
