Fires raging in Herzegovina, burning near Bileća, Gacko, Čapljina...

Fires are raging in several locations in Herzegovina today in inaccessible mountainous areas, so firefighters, without air support, can only monitor them to prevent them from threatening family homes, infrastructure, and forest areas, reports the Patria News Agency.

The fire, which broke out on Sunday in the municipality of Čapljina, quickly spread to Križevac hill above Međugorje, which is visited by a large number of pilgrims.

The fire has not been localized and is being extinguished by one fire unit from Čitluk with backpacks filled with water, as the terrain is inaccessible, making it impossible to access the fire site with fire trucks.

Low vegetation and grass are burning in that area. Dozens of fires were recorded in the Herzegovina region on Monday. The largest is in the area of Bileća and Gacko in the eastern part of Herzegovina, where the fire has engulfed an area of about 10,000 hectares.

Residential buildings are not threatened. Firefighting is difficult due to wind and high temperatures. A larger fire is also raging near Mostar, above the Salakovac hydroelectric power plant. Firefighters can only monitor it because it is located in an inaccessible and mined area, and it does not threaten family homes.
