A two-day European Council meeting begins in Brussels today, with the main topic being the outcome of the referendum on Great Britain's membership in the EU. In the invitation letter sent to member states regarding the summit, it is stated that British Prime Minister David Cameron will present the situation in Britain after the referendum today, reports the BH News Agency Patria.
An informal summit of 27 EU heads of state and government is scheduled for Wednesday, the first time in this composition, and it will discuss the political consequences of the British referendum.
A discussion on the future of the EU will be held.
European Council President Donald Tusk has had several bilateral meetings, including talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin and French President François Hollande in Paris.
At the same time, US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Brussels and London today to convey the US support to both sides.
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated that Cameron's decision to wait until October for Britain to request withdrawal from the EU is "scandalous" and that thus "the entire European continent has become a British hostage".
The EU wants Britain's withdrawal from the bloc as soon as possible, and to this end, EU lawyers are studying whether it is possible to speed up the withdrawal mechanism, i.e., the activation of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.
Therefore, as German media reported today, the EP and Schulz intend to give the British until today to officially inform Brussels about the referendum outcome, German media report.
