The number of traffic accidents in Bosnia and Herzegovina has significantly increased in the past two years. In 2014, 500 more were registered than in 2013, and the number of accidents with fatalities and injuries also increased, writes the Patria News Agency.

Al Jazeera published research by EuroRAP and BIHAMK which states that in 2014, as many as 52 sections were classified as high-risk in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity alone. Even more concerning is that some of them connect the largest cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thus, one of the most critical traffic sections in Bosnia and Herzegovina is about 100 kilometers long and connects Sarajevo and Živinice.

The Federal Police Administration states that in 2014, 27,844 traffic accidents occurred on the roads in the Federation of BiH, in which 161 people died, while the number of seriously injured was 1,022, and slightly injured 5,856.
In the smaller BiH entity, Republika Srpska, 131 people died in 2014. Practically, research shows, the number of traffic accidents in BiH is three times higher than in Europe.

However, bad roads are not the only cause of traffic accidents. Traffic accident expert Ševal Kovačević says that traffic accidents in BiH are most often caused by inappropriate speed, illegal overtaking, inability to drive, alcohol, fatigue, drug influence, failure to yield right of way, and running off the road, writes Patria.
