Australia plans to permanently confiscate mobile phones from drivers caught using them while driving

(Patria) - In Western Australia, a radical measure is being considered to curb the use of mobile phones while driving, which has become a serious problem with the increase in traffic accidents.

A discussion is planned about permanently confiscating mobile phones from drivers caught committing the offense, reports Index.

This idea comes in response to a worrying increase in the number of accidents, with 118 people killed since the beginning of the year, the highest in the last eight years.

Former Chairman of the Road Safety Council, Murray Lampard, supports this proposal, believing that the fear of losing their mobile phones could deter drivers from using them while driving.

- If they were afraid of losing their mobile phone, which is so important to them, I think they would think very carefully about whether to use it while behind the wheel - said Lampard.
