(Patria) - Dozens of passengers, mostly women and children, were killed in western Afghanistan when the bus they were traveling in hit a roadside bomb, local officials confirmed, Al Jazeera reported.
"A passenger bus traveling between Kandahar and Herat hit a bomb planted by the Taliban on the road. At least 32 passengers were killed and 17 were injured," confirmed Farah Province spokesperson Muhibullah Muhib.
The death toll is feared to be higher, as many of the injured are in critical condition, AP reports.
Although no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, AP reports that the Taliban are very active in the Farah region and use such bombs, but their targets are usually officials and security forces.
The explosion followed a day after the United Nations warned of a high number of civilian casualties in the war in Afghanistan, despite efforts to end the 18-year conflict.
Every fifth civilian casualty in the first half of the year was killed by improvised explosive devices, according to a report by the UN mission for Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan, dozens of members of the Afghan security forces and Taliban insurgents are killed daily in fighting, while negotiations continue, AFP reports.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 200,000 civilians have been forced to leave their homes.
